Representative John Macco (R-Ledgeview) introduced LRB-2015/1 with Sen. Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay) and Attorney General Brad Schimel. This is part of the larger Justice for Children Package introduced today.
“I am excited to be an author of the Justice for Children package. Protecting children must be a prominent concern for all legislators,” said Rep. Macco. “I want to thank Attorney General Schimel and Sen. Cowles for their work in advocating for this legislation.”
LRB-2015/1 will require that child abuse or neglect cases to be referred to law enforcement. Although both types of cases are considered felonies, currently they are referred only to Child Protective Services. Child abuse and neglect comprise nearly 80% of child maltreatment cases in the United States.
“It is time for us to recognize the need to provide stronger tools to address these crimes and the legislation and resources we are announcing today will help Wisconsin to do the best it can to protect our children,” Schimel said. “My experience as a prosecutor included countless child abuse and neglect cases. In that work, I saw firsthand how child abuse and neglect often do irreparable harm to children and families.”
“Children should not have to live in fear. 40,000 reports of child maltreatment to Child Protective Services in 2013 is 40,000 to many,” said Rep. Macco. “I believe this bill is overall a positive step forward in protecting our children.
